For my first blog I wanted to focus on the subject of mandating batting helmets for slow pitch softball.  Now I know there isn't much danger is taking one to the noggin while actually batting, but how many players have you seen get hit in the head with a thrown ball while running the bases or sliding?

A few years ago a player from my team was running from third base to home when a ball came in from left field and hit him squarely in the back of the head and that's not a sound I ever want to hear again. He took about two steps before falling down with eyes rolled up in his head and began uncontrollably twitching. This went on for several minutes while we called 911. He was taken to the hospital with a concussion and was released later that night. The game was stopped and we ended up forfeiting.

Another player from our team was hit in the temple running to first. He was dazed and confused for a period of time but refused medical attention.

I believe it's just a matter of time before someone gets accidentally hit in the head and ends up severely injured or even dying as a result. So I'm trying to figure out what percentage of players think wearing batting helmets for slow pitch softball would be a good thing?  Please let me know your thoughts pro and con.

Thank you.
